Professor Sarah Z. Tasker

The Tasker Lab seeks to exploit the ability of sulfur to stabilize anionic and radical intermediates to develop new transformations. One area of the lab focuses on the synthesis and utilization of gas-releasing molecules as alternatives to pressurized cylinders when the gas has safety, stability, or other practical handling concerns. We found that, when treated with an amine base, S-aryl thioformates release carbon monoxide (CO) at room temperature in near quantitative yields. The rate of CO release can be tuned by choice of base and para-substituent, with S-(4-nitrophenyl) methanethioate releasing CO in <1 minute. These molecules are thus attractive examples of stoichiometric CO-releasing molecules (CORMs). The resulting CO can be transferred via cannula or specialized glassware for a variety of applications, including carbonylative cross-coupling, biochemical studies, and inorganic synthesis.
