General description

A unit of Hormones in Frozen Human Serum standard reference material (SRM) consists of two vials each of two materials: one from a pool of healthy, premenopausal adult females and one from a pool of healthy adult males. The certified values of the SRM were determined using higher-order reference measurement procedures calibrated with high-purity chemical reference standards in combination with higher-order measurement procedures conducted by the CDC. The uncertainties are expanded uncertainties at the 95 % level of confidence. The certified values of the SRM, apply only to serum thawed to room temperature, 20 °C to 25 °C.

Application

ThisNIST SRM 971a is intended primarily for use in evaluating the accuracy of procedures for the determination of the steroid hormones cortisol, progesterone, and testosterone, and thyroid hormones total thyroxine (T4), and total 3,3′,5-triiodothyronine (T3) in human serum.
It is also intended for use in validating working or secondary reference materials.

Features and Benefits

  • A unit of SRM contains two vials of each material. Each vial approximately contains 2 mL of human serum
  • Both materials in the SRM are unfortified

Other Notes

  • SRM 971a is intended for research use.
  • The serum is shipped frozen (on dry ice) and, upon receipt, should be stored frozen until ready for use.
  • Expiration details and storage and use instructions are provided on the NIST certificate
  • Notes on biomaterial handling, disposal, and transport documented in MSDS

Mass spectrometry methods exhibit higher accuracy and lower variability than immunoassays at low testosterone concentrations. We developed and validated an ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) assay for quantifying serum total testosterone.
