General description
Z-Lycopene, also known as cis-lycopene, is a carotenoid and a bioactive natural compound primarily found in Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) along with many fruits and vegetables. Current research indicates that this metabolite is an inhibitor and may possess diverse biological activities, including anticancer, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties.
Application
Z-Lycopene is a natural product derived from plant source that finds application in compound screening libraries, metabolomics, phytochemical, and pharmaceutical research.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Z-Lycopene is naturally found in small quantities in several types of tomatoes and in higher amounts in processed food (such as: tomato sauce and tomato soup). Furthermore, it was found that Z-Lycopene has higher antioxidant properties than Lycopene (all trans- Lycopene).
In raw food and processed food there are a wide variety of Z-Lycopene isomers, which differ in the geometrical configuration of the molecule. However, the most abundant isomer is the 5Z-Lycopene. Moreover, it was found that consumed Lycopene isomerizes to Z-Lycopene in the body, possibly in the enterocytes while the predominant isomer is the 5Z-Lycopene.
