Description générale

Levan is a polysaccharide produced by some microorganisms and plants. It is a non-typical biopolymer composed of fructose units linked by β-(2→6). Levan is an exopolysaccharide (synthesized outside the cell).

Application

Levan from Erwinia herbicola has been used as a:
  • standard for the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analysis of levan produced by Bacillus licheniformis NS032 in sugar beet molasses-based medium
  • polysaccharide substrate to test the ability of Prevotella copri isolates to grow when polysaccharides were provided as the sole carbon source in vitro
  • substrate in levanase activity assay

Actions biochimiques/physiologiques

Levan has various industrial applications like cosmetics, medicine, or nanotechnology. It might exhibit anti-hyperglycemic effect and anti-tumor action, prevent diabetes-induced oxidative stress and increase catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the heart. Levan is also recognized for its immunomodulating and prebiotic actions.

Autres remarques

The production of levan by Bacillus licheniformis NS032 in a medium based on sugar beet molasses was studied. High polysaccharide yields were produced by using diluted molasses (100-140 g/L of total sugars) with the addition of commercial sucrose up to 200 g/L

Genomic differences between gut-resident bacterial strains likely underlie significant interindividual variation in microbiome function. Traditional methods of determining community composition, such as 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, fail to capture this functional diversity. Metagenomic approaches are a significant step forward

Gut-dwelling Prevotella copri (P. copri), the most prevalent Prevotella species in the human gut, have been associated with diet and disease. However, our understanding of their diversity and function remains rudimentary because studies have been limited to 16S and metagenomic surveys
