It also acts on dopamine receptors in lactophilic hypothalamus cells to suppress prolactin production in the pituitary gland. It has been used for monotherapy of Parkinson′s disease in the early phase; combination therapy, together with levodopa and a decarboxylase inhibitor such as carbidopa, in progressive-phase Parkinson′s disease and adjunctive therapy of prolactin-producing pituitary gland tumors (microprolactinomas).

Drugs & aging, 20(11), 847-855 (2003-09-11)
Dopamine agonists have been widely used as add-on to levodopa in the treatment of Parkinson's disease with motor fluctuations. However, the use of dopamine agonists in early Parkinson's disease and levodopa-naive patients is controversial. Although dopamine agonists have been compared

Drugs, 64(18), 2125-2141 (2004-09-03)
Cabergoline is a synthetic ergoline dopamine agonist with a high affinity for dopamine D2 receptors and a long elimination half-life. This agent provides continuous dopaminergic stimulation with once-daily administration. Adjuvant oral cabergoline is usually well tolerated and effective in controlling
