General description

Eosin has been used in combination with methylene blue, to detect carboxlic acid group in organic compounds. It gives a red or orange-coloured precipitate on treatment with carboxylic acid solution in water, acetone, alcohol, or dioxin. It is also used as an indicator for differentiation of the colon from the typhoid-dysentery group of bacteria.
Mixture of eosin and methylene blue stains for use in differential microbiological media to culture and identify pathogenic microorganisms, e.g., Neisseria sicca,, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus.

Application

Eosin methylene blue was used for staining cells, during optical microscopy studies, done for analysis of cell morphology.
