General description

Water-soluble powder prepared by method of Partrige, et al.

Application

Elastin is a structural protein which has been used in studies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It may be used to investigate why there is a lack of repair for these proteins in patients with COPD.
Highly stable and hemocompatible protein now finding use in construction of biomaterials as a result of several strategies for its solubilization.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Protein responsible for the elasticity of many tissues. It is especially important in blood vessels, where it comprises about 50% of the dry tissue weight.

Caution

Forms coacervate at pH 5.0 and 37 °C

Suitability

Suitable for determination of elastolytic activity as described by Keller and Mandi.
