Priyavrat Vashisth: My Next Great Impossible
Priyavrat Vashisth is a PhD student at the University of Mississippi, USA, and is a recipient of the Bader Award for Chemistry Innovation 2024. He gave us an insight into his work in revolutionizing the treatment for millions suffering from chronic conditions, such as endometriosis and cancer.
“My Next Great Impossible is to advance the translation of nanomaterial-based therapeutics from the laboratory to clinical settings”
Breast cancer and endometriosis are two of the most common chronic diseases affecting millions around the world. Most current treatment methods involve the use of drugs and other compounds that provide short-term solutions and cause severe side effects, thus decreasing the quality of life of patients. My Next Great Impossible is to advance the translation of nanomaterial-based therapeutics from the laboratory to clinical settings.
“By coupling the photophysical properties of gold nanomaterials with the impressive biological properties of ionic liquids, we can provide targeted treatment…”
Gold nanoparticles offer tremendous potential due to their unique physical properties. My research focuses on developing advanced gold nanomaterial-based therapeutic systems by integrating them with a novel class of organic compounds called ionic liquids. By coupling the photophysical properties of gold nanomaterials with the impressive biological properties of ionic liquids, we can provide targeted treatment with photothermal ablation to a specific site in the body, such as diseased endometrial tissue.
“I aim to create long-term treatment solutions for cancer, endometriosis, and other chronic diseases, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.”
The potential applications of this technology are enormous and with it, I aim to create long-term treatment solutions for cancer, endometriosis, and other chronic diseases, improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
“What keeps me motivated to achieve My Next Great Impossible is my passion for biotechnology and my parents’ unwavering belief in me”
Research is a journey with inevitable ups and downs - it is crucial to stay motivated when things are not going your way and always focus on the bigger picture. What keeps me motivated to achieve My Next Great Impossible is my passion for biotechnology and my parents’ unwavering belief in me. I’m very fortunate that I have an excellent Ph.D. supervisor, Dr. Eden Tanner, who always values my scientific thoughts and opinions. I strive to enjoy the process and maintain a positive mindset throughout and believe that anything is achievable if you’re consistent and honest with your efforts.
