Quinine hemisulfate salt monohydrate has been used as a tastant for testing the saccharin and quinine consumption in wild-type or knock-in mice.[1] It has been used for studying the toxicity of heme (FP)-complexes.

Quinine hemisulfate is an alkaloid originally isolated from the Cinchona family of South American trees. It inhibits mitochondrial ATP-regulated potassium channel[2] and posssess antimalarial, anticholinergic, antihypertensive and hypoglycemic properties.[3]
