General description

Filter Code: FMLW
Unlike fibrous filter media that trap particles in their matrix, Fluoropore® (hydrophobic PTFE) membranes collect particles on their surface, which make them ideal candidates for use in airborne particle monitoring applications. This surface collection provides better detection efficiencies and lower FWHM measurements. (FWHM is defined as the full width at half of the maximum height of the P0-218 peak obtained during sampling of room air.)

•High collection efficiency
•Extremely low pressure drop
•Higher throughput capacity
•Black backing ensures proper orientation

Choice of Pore Sizes:
Fluoropore membranes are available in 3 µm (FSLW) and 5 µm (FMLW) pore sizes - the smaller pore size provides low FWHM; the larger pore size has very low pressure drop and greater throughput capacity, which minimizes the number of filter changeouts.

Contrasting Backing Material:
The white backing of our FMLW filter is gridded to assist in identifying membrane orientation for the correct installation into sampling devices.
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which have been re-engineered to enable more sustainable research solutions. The inner & outer boxes containing the membrane discs are made from bio-circular material allocated using the ISCC mass balance approach. Click here for more information.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. What is the reason for the difference in air flow rate between the FSLW04700 Millipore Fluoropore with a 3.0 µm pore size and the FMLW04700 Millipore Fluoropore with a 5.0 µm pore size, both made of hydrophobic PTFE and 47 mm membrane?

    1 answer
    1. The relationship between flow rate and pressure drop is such that the lower the flow rate, the lower the pressure drop. Fluoropore membranes come in 3 and 5 µm pore sizes. The smaller pore size offers low FWHM, while the larger pore size results in very low pressure drop and greater throughput capacity, thereby minimizing the number of filter changeouts.

*FWHM refers to the full width at half of the maximum height of the P0-218 peak obtained during sampling of room air.

  2. Why is the backing of the FMLW04700 5.0 um PTFE 47mm disc gridded? Additionally, what is the reason for the gridded backing on FMLW03700, FMLW02500, SA1J014I14, and SA1J006I15, which are also "FMLW" discs with different diameters?

    1 answer
    1. The FMLW04700 5 um PTFE membrane with a white gridded backing is designed for air alpha monitoring of radioactive particles. In this application, the filter membrane must be oriented in the alpha monitoring instrument so that the PTFE side faces the air flow. The gridded backing serves the purpose of making it easy to distinguish between the two sides. The backing is necessary because the PTFE membrane alone can be floppy and difficult to handle, particularly in field testing scenarios.
