General description

The Ki-67 antigen is a nuclear, non-histone protein that is present in proliferatingcells. Though its specific role is largely postulated and still yet to be determined,Ki-67’s presence during cellular division makes it an excellent target for labeling rapidlygrowing malignancies. Given that its presence correlates with cell proliferation, theimmunohistochemical labeling of Ki-67 antigen may be useful in characterizing a lesion’sgrowth fraction.

Tumor cells utilize glucose to fuel their anabolic needs, including rapid proliferation. However, due to defective vasculature and increased glucose uptake, tumor cells must overcome glucose deprivation. Accordingly, tumor cells depend on cellular pathways promoting survival under such conditions. Targeting

The prognostic significance of quantitative measurement of tumor proliferative activity was evaluated for oligodendroglial tumors. Ki-67/MIB-1 immunochemistry was used to measure proliferative activity in 81 oligodendrogliomas and oligoastrocytomas. The relationship among survival, proliferation, histological features, and clinical variables were evaluated
