General description

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is an amphipathic detergent commonly used for denaturing proteins. SDS has a long-chain aliphatic group, with negatively charged sulfate groups that coat the surface of proteins, causing them to lose their quaternary structure.

Application

Sodium dodecyl sulfate has been used:
  • in chromatin immunoprecipitation
  • in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE)
  • as a component of radioimmunoprecipitation assay buffer for immunoblotting
Anionic detergent

Analysis Note

Tested for use in denatured polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling plays critical roles during skeletal development and its excessive signaling causes genetic diseases of connective tissues including Marfan syndrome and acromelic dysplasia. However, the mechanisms underlying prevention of excessive TGF-β signaling in skeletogenesis remain unclear.
