General description

Human gelsolin (also known as brevin) is an actin severing protein found in mammalian cells and blood plasma.[1] Gelsolins consist of a 730 amino acid core structure which contains six repeated domains. These six domains make up three distinct actin binding sites. The plasma enzyme contains an N-terminal extension of 25 amino acids that raises its molecular weight from 90 kD to 93 kD.[2]

Application

Plasma gelsolin levels may be used to identify patients at risk for increased morbidity.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Gelsolin is an actin-binding protein that regulates the assembly and disassembly of actin filaments[4][5].
Gelsolin is an actin-severing protein found in mammalian cells and blood plasma. Exhibits tumor suppressor activity in several cancer cell lines and in nude mice.
