General description

Fetal bovine serum (FBS), a popular supplement, is mainly sourced from unborn calves. It contains nutrients, vitamins, hormones, transport proteins, and attachment, spreading, and growth factors.

Application

Fetal Bovine Serum, Research Grade has been used as a supplement:
  • of endothelial cell medium (ECMed) for culturing human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC)
  • in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium (DMEM) to resuspend human adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ASC)
  • in the tissue culture medium 199 (TCM199) for in vitro oocyte maturation
  • in minimum essential medium (MEM) Earle′s medium for culturing Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) II cells

Biochem/physiol Actions

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is mainly used in organ, cell, and tissue culture. FBS is the first choice to be used as a supplement in all eukaryotic cell culture media. It supports the proliferation and viability of most cell types.

  • Endotoxin and hemoglobin tested
  • Tested for the presence of bacteria, virus, and mycoplasma
