Phytanic acid is a methyl-branched fatty acid present in the human diet. Due to its structure, degradation by beta-oxidation is impossible. Instead, phytanic acid is oxidized by alpha-oxidation, yielding pristanic acid. Despite many efforts to elucidate the alpha-oxidation pathway, it

Refsum disease was first recognized as a distinct disease entity by Sigvald Refsum in the 1940s. The discovery of markedly elevated levels of the branched-chain fatty acid phytanic acid in certain patients marked Refsum disease as a disorder of lipid

Meat is an integral part of the human diet. Besides essential amino acids and nutritive factors of high quality and availability, meat provides often overlooked components of importance for human health. These are amino acids and bioactive compounds that may

Phytanic acid and pristanic acid are branched-chain fatty acids, present at micromolar concentrations in the plasma of healthy individuals. Here we show that both phytanic acid and pristanic acid activate the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) in a concentration-dependent manner.

Phytanic acid (3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoic acid) is a branched-chain fatty acid which cannot be beta-oxidized due to the presence of the first methyl group at the 3-position. Instead, phytanic acid undergoes alpha-oxidation to produce pristanic acid (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecanoic acid) plus CO(2). Pristanic acid

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. Could you please provide instructions on how to dilute these compounds to 5 µM, and 50 µM concentrations, and recommend the appropriate solvent for dissolving them? I would like to know the stability of the solutions?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not tested for solubility. However, various sources state this chemical is soluble in water at < 0.1 mg/mL, DMSO at approximately 100 mg/mL, Ethanol at approximately 100 mg/mL, Dimethylformamide at approximately 100 mg/mL, and 0.15 M Tris-HCl (pH 8.5) at 1 mg/mL. The stability in the solution has not been determined.
Phytanic acid is a mixture of isomers supplied as a neat liquid. The minimum purity specification is 96%. The molecular weight of this material is 312.53. The density has not been established but its estimated range is 0.80 to 0.90 g/mL.

Assuming a purity of 96% and a density of 0.85 g/mL, the concentration would be 2.6 M. Diluting this material to 5 µM, and 50 µM will depend on the volume needed. Please utilize this calculator below for dilution instructions:

    1 answer
    1. Product P4060 is completely synthetic compound. The enantiomeric distribution is not determined. Product 139912 is a racemic mixture of cis and trans.
