General description

Complement C6 is one of five complement cascade proteins that are incorporated into the lytic terminal complement complex. It is over 33% homologous with C7, including all 56 cysteine residues; C6 and C7 share the arrangement of LDL-receptor class A and B modules, the thrombospondin type I module at the C-terminus, and the two short consensus repeat modules.

The mature protein consists of 913 amino acid residues preceded by a 21-residue signal sequence.

Application

Complement C6 is one of the end terminals of the complement system contained in the membrane attack complex (MAC). It has been shown that complement C6 and the MAC are crucial for the development of arthritis in osteoarthritis and gouty arthritis. This could serve as a therapeutic target area for suppression of joint inflammation.

Quality

Functionally active by a sensitive hemolytic assay.
