Application

3-Methyl-1-butanol was used as standard in GC-MS analysis of volatile compounds produced by Rhizobacteria[1] and Spanish Honeys.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

3-Methyl-1-butanol is produced as a fusel alcohol in yeast fermentation. It is a naturally-produced fuel substitute that has advantages of acting as precursor for isoamyl acetate and replacement for gasoline.[3]

Chemical and plant growth studies of Bacilli strains GB03 and IN937a revealed that the volatile components 2,3-butanediol and acetoin trigger plant growth promotion in Arabidopsis. Differences in growth promotion when cytokinin-signaling mutants are exposed to GB03 versus IN937a volatiles suggest

3-Methyl-1-butanol is a potential fuel additive or substitute. Previously this compound was identified in small quantities in yeast fermentation as one of the fusel alcohols. In this work, we engineered an Escherichia coli strain to produce 3-methyl-1-butanol from glucose via
