General description

Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) is an ion-pairing agent that is usually used in analytical chemistry. It is used in the analysis of marine compounds by thin-layer chromatography-pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TLC-pyrolysis-GC/MS) and thermal desorption/capillary GC/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. TMAOH is used in the capillary zone electrophoresis technique for the separation of inorganic anions. Some studies report the oligonucleotide reassociation in the presence of TMAOH. TMAOH aids in the synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds, such as vinyl halides and tetramethylammonium dithiocarboxylates. It is useful in the preparation of iron oxide nanoparticles for use as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents.

Application

Tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate has been used in a study to assess strains of Pseudomnas species by a single-step gas chromatographic characterization procedure. It has also been used in a study to investigate solid-state metal hydride batteries nickel oxyhydroxide-metal hydride and manganese dioxide-metal hydride.
Tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate has been used in the synthesis of silicalite-1 seed crystals.
