General description

Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar aprotic solvent that is generally used as a reaction medium and reagent in organic reactions.[1][2]

Application

Dimethyl Sulfoxide can be used as:
  • An oxidant for the conversion of isonitriles into isocyanates.[3]
  •  A solvent in polymerase chain reaction.[4]
  • A cryoprotectant for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs.[5]
  • An oxidant in Swern oxidation, that can be activated by oxalyl chloride and used in the oxidation of long-chain alcohols to carbonyls.[6]
  • Solvent/oxidant in the α-hydroxylation of ketones in the presence of NBS/I2 catalyst.[7]

Caution

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.
